I was not sure what to expect but knew I needed to regain focus/vision to forge ahead in my PhD program.
The theme I went in with was a need for balance in my life, and Gretchen totally facilitated my ability to clearly see what I need to do to accomplish this balance in all areas.

I think it's safe to say that many of us are living through an intense time of upheaval. The systems we’ve relied on, the truths we’ve held dear, and the paths we’ve walked are quickly shifting right beneath our feet.
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the chaos, the fear, and the uncertainty of what lies ahead. But, what if we could do the hard thing and embrace the messiness of this transformation as the sacred work that it truly is?
In the face of darkness, we're called to remember that transformation is rarely gentle. It's usually painful, messy, and disorienting. But, it's also incredibly necessary.
This is our collective chrysalis—a time when everything we thought we were is now dissolving, making way for something entirely new.
The story of transformation is universal. A caterpillar, content in its small world, spins a chrysalis and enters a period of complete dissolution. Inside that dark, confined space, the caterpillar becomes unrecognizable.
Its very being is reduced to a cellular soup, but from that destruction emerges the butterfly—a being of beauty, freedom, and flight.
We're in the chrysalis now. The darkness we face—the fear, the pain, the chaos—feels all-consuming. But this dissolution isn't the end; it's the beginning of an inevitable transformation.
The systems and beliefs that no longer serve us are breaking apart so that something new can emerge. This is the process of awakening, and it's simultaneously messy and miraculous.
Darkness isn't the enemy. It's the counterpart to light, a necessary force that helps us see what needs to change. In the darkest moments, we're forced to confront truths we might otherwise avoid.
We're given the opportunity to let go of illusions and step into a deeper, more authentic understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
As we navigate the darkness, we can remind ourselves that it's temporary. The night always gives way to dawn. The shadow is a teacher, showing us where we need to heal, grow, and transform.
When we stop fearing the darkness, we begin to see it for what it truly is: a partner in our awakening.
They say that it's always darkest before the dawn. That the moments when we feel most lost are usually the moments when we're closest to a breakthrough. This isn't the time to give up; it's the time to hold tightly to what matters most.
Transformation asks a lot from us. It asks us to stay the course, even when the path is unclear. It asks us to trust in the process, even when we can't see the outcome. And it asks us to believe in the possibility of light, even when all we see is darkness.
The world is changing in ways we might not fully understand yet. But change isn't something to fear. It's something to embrace. Hold close the people and values that matter most to you.
Take small steps toward the light, even when the way feels uncertain. Every act of love, kindness, and compassion is a beacon of light in the darkness.
In the face of so many massive challenges, it’s easy to feel powerless. The problems of the world can seem too vast, too overwhelming for one person to make a difference. But even the smallest acts of kindness can create ripples that reach far beyond what we can see.
Remember the story of the man on the beach, walking among thousands of stranded starfish. As he walked, he bent down to pick up one starfish at a time, throwing them back into the sea.
When someone asked him why he bothered, saying, “You could never save them all,” he replied, “It made a difference to that one.”
We may not be able to change everything, but we can change something. Each starfish we throw back, each act of kindness we extend, is a step toward the world we want to create. In times of darkness, these small acts are the seeds of transformation.
The times we are living through are unprecedented, and the road ahead isn't going to be easy. But transformation never is. It's a journey that asks us to let go of what no longer serves us, to trust in the process, and to believe in the possibility of something new.
This is a collective awakening. We're in this together. The obstacles we face aren't here to defeat us; they're here to teach us, to transform us, to free us.
“The obstacle is the path.”
- Zen Proverb
Let's walk this path together, embracing the darkness as a necessary part of our journey. Let's hold onto hope, even when the way feels uncertain. And let's remember that every act of love, every moment of compassion, every starfish we throw back into the sea makes a difference.
The dawn is coming. And when it arrives, we will rise together, transformed, and ready to create a world that reflects the best of who we are.
Holding your hand in solidarity and in awe of your resilience,
